Speaking practice assignments

Set a speaking prompt, let students record their answers, and get rubric-based AI feedback on fluency and pronunciation.

Last updated Sep 6, 2026

Speaking assignments give students a prompt to read or respond to aloud. They
record audio, and Zense AI grades it against your rubric.

Speaking practice is ideal for language classes, oral assessments, and fluency drills. Students record directly in the browser with a live timer and retake option.

Create a speaking task

Start with a grade level and topic — AI can draft the reading material for you.

  1. Go to Assignments → New assignment → Speaking practice.
  2. Set a grade level and a topic or reading-material idea.
  3. Choose Generate with AI to draft the reading material, or Start from
    empty
    .

Set up the task

The builder lets you control the passage, recording rules, and how the rubric is weighted.

In the builder you control:

  • Read-aloud material — the passage students read. Ask Zack to draft or
simplify it from the assistant panel (Edit with Zack). Zack applies
speaking edits directly (no Implement / Discard step).
  • Recording rules — maximum (and optional minimum) length in seconds, and the
    language to grade against.
  • Detect AI-generated voices — flag submissions that sound synthetic for your
    review.
  • Rubric weights — how much Fluency, Pronunciation, Vocabulary,
and Content & ideas each count.

How students respond

Students see the prompt, record their answer, preview it, and submit when ready.

Students open the task, record their response (with a live timer and
retake option), preview it, and submit.

Feedback

After submission, AI produces a detailed report with transcript, rubric scores, and next steps.

After submission, Zack listens and produces an AI report with a transcript,
rubric scores, strengths, and next steps — released according to your review mode.

Use the AI report as a starting point, then add your own teacher feedback before
releasing results.
